RACE REPORT | F1 Belgium 2024

The 2024 Belgian Grand Prix was won by Lewis Hamilton after his teammate George Russell was disqualified due to underweight of his car.

Max Verstappen was fastest in Saturday's qualifying, but the Dutchman was subsequently penalised for an extra engine change, so he started from 11th place.

Pole position was thus awarded to Charles Leclerc, who was joined on the front row by Sergio Pérez.

While it was wet at Spa on Saturday, the race was run in ideal weather. Leclerc took the lead after the start but only held it until lap three when Hamilton overtook him.

At that point, the order was as follows: Hamilton, Leclerc, Perez, Piastri, Russell, Sainz, Norris and Verstappen.

The race leaders began pitting from lap 11, with Russell and Verstappen pitting first for tyre changes. Hamilton, Pérez and Piastri pitted a lap later, Leclerc two.

While Leclerc pitted later than Hamilton during his first pit stops, the reverse was true during his second pit stops. Still, it wasn't enough to get back ahead of him. Piastri was the next to pit, giving Russell the lead.

On lap 36, Piastri got past Leclerc, moved up to third and began to chase down the leading both Mercedes cars.

Russell continued to lead the way, managing to keep his very worn tyres in shape and gradually the possibility of a win became more and more likely.

Hamilton did close in on Russell in the closing laps but was unable to overtake him, and the 26-year-old Briton went on to claim his third career victory.

However, after the race Russell was disqualified due to the weight of his monopost being too low, which did not comply with the rules. This gave Hamilton his 105th career victory.

Second place went to Piastri ahead of Leclerc, Verstappen and Norris.
